Patient Rights and Responsibilities

1. Each patient treated at South Kansas City Surgicenter has the right to:

  • Respectful care given by competent personnel with consideration of their privacy concerning their medical care and personal health information.
  • Every patient has the right to be cared for in a safe manner and in a safe, sanitary environment.
  • Be given the name of their attending physician, the name of all other physicians directly assisting in their care, and the names and functions of other health care persons having direct contact with the patient.
  • Have records pertaining to their medical care treated as confidential.
  • Know what South Kansas City Surgicenter’s rules and regulations apply to their conduct as a patient.
  • Expect emergency procedures to be implemented without unnecessary delay.
  • Expedient and professional transfer to another facility when medically necessary and to have the responsible person and the facility to which the patient is transferred to be notified prior to transfer.
  • Good quality care and high professional standards that are continually maintained and reviewed.
  • To be informed of the absence of appropriate Malpractice Liability insurance.
  • Full information, in layman’s terms, concerning diagnosis and treatment; if it is not medically advisable to give this information to the patient, then the information will be given to the responsible person on his/her behalf.
  • Information on after-hour and emergency care.
  • Give an informed consent to the physician prior to the start of the procedure.
  • Be advised of participation in a medical research program, donor program, marketing or advertising program. The patient will give consent prior to the participation in such a program; a patient may also refuse to continue in a program that has previously given informed consent to participate in.
  • Refuse drugs or procedures and have a physician explain the medical consequences of the drugs or procedure(s).
  • Medical and nursing services without discrimination based upon age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, disability or source of payment.
  • Have access to an interpreter whenever possible.
  • Be provided with, upon request, access to all information contained in their medical record.
  • Accurate information regarding the competence and capabilities of the organization.
  • Receive information regarding methods of expressing suggestions or grievances to the organization.
  • To exercise his or her rights without being subjected to discrimination or reprisal.
  • Be informed of expected services and financial charges and receive an explanation of the patient bill.
  • Reporting of abuse, neglect or exploitation.

2. Each patient treated at South Kansas City Surgicenter has the responsibilities to:

  • Treat all persons employed by the facility and all other patients and families with respect.
  • Follow instructions given by his/her surgeon, anesthesiologist, and operative team.
  • Provide South Kansas City Surgicenter with all medical information, including all medications, drugs, over-the-counter products and dietary supplements, allergies or sensitivities, which may have a direct effect on the provider at the facility.
  • Provide South Kansas City Surgicenter with all information regarding third party insurance coverage.
  • Fulfill financial responsibility, for all services received, or as determined by the patient’s insurance carrier.
  • Provide a responsible adult to transport him/her home from the facility and remain with him/her for 24 hours, or as required by his/her medical provider.
  • Inform his/her provider about any living will, medical power of attorney, or other recognized directive that could affect his/her care.
